Bluebird Trail

Our partners for this outdoor classroom are the US Forest Service, AIDB, and the MES After-school program. This is one of our newest outdoor classrooms. This was the product of project-based learning that began with the 9th graders in 2011-2012 and new houses were built during the 2016-2017 and 2021-2022 school years. Their driving question was how to increase biodiversity at MHS. Each department contributed to the PBL from researching 50 native Alabama birds, to mating habits, to measuring and mapping where the houses should be placed, to actually building the bird house. The 9th graders recorded and monitored the mating of blue birds, then they gave tours to 2nd graders to the 25 bird houses on the two campuses. The US Forest Service provided the funding for bluebird houses. AIDB supplies us with the Bluebird houses and every January the after-school program goes around and cleans and repairs the houses in preparation for the upcoming nests. The birdhouses are a benefit to the community because they provide a habitat for the Eastern Bluebird so that the species can reproduce and prosper.
